Avalon Nature Preserve

Updated: Jul 21, 2021

Avalon Nature Preserve is one of the most beautiful nature preserves I have personally ever had the opportunity to immerse myself in. Originally 8 acres of land in 1997, Avalon Nature Preserve has continued to grow and flourish into a thriving 216 acres of walkable fields, forests, and wetlands. The Paul Simmons Foundation protects, restores, and maintains the nature preserve in honor of Paul himself, an outdoor lover of the natural world whose life was taken far too soon. The hope is for Avalon's visitors to continue to connect with nature in a meaningful, long-lasting manner. Avalon Nature Preserve follows the carry-in-carry-out philosophy as part of the leave no trace campaign. Our goal, as avid outdoor lovers, is to leave nature as we found it; observe, do not disturb.

Getting There

Avalon Nature Preserve is located in the Head of the Harbor in Stony Brook, New York. Since there are no major parkways leading into the Head of the Harbor, a good portion of the drive to the preserve is through the backroads. While there is a parking area located within the preserve, I have personally never parked there (it can be difficult to find). Rather, I have always parked in the Stony Brook Village area. The village is a very short walk to the main entrance of the nature preserve's boardwalk (literally less than a 5 minute walk). The parking here is free, so I find it the easiest/best parking option!

A common question is whether or not there is an entrance fee for Avalon Nature Preserve. Surprisingly, there is no entrance fee! The nature preserve is open to the public 6 days a week (Tuesday - Sunday) year round. I love this aspect since it truly allows anyone and everyone to have the opportunity to surround themselves by nature.

What To Do

1. The Boardwalk

While there is truly only one "thing to do" while visiting Avalon, the preserve certainly makes it a great experience. When you visit Avalon, be prepared to walk, walk, walk. When you first get to the preserve, you will immediately notice a large pond beaming with wildlife. As you enter Avalon, you will begin walking on a nicely preserved boardwalk that will soon have you surrounded by an abundance of trees. As you climb up the stairs, the paths will become more natural, although they are preserved in a family-friendly way.

2. Frog Pond

Once you climb the rustic stairs, you will immediately see a beautifully landscaped pond. This area is called Frog Pond and yes, in many cases, you will see an abundance of wildlife. I have seen everything from frogs to fish to turtles in this area. While admiring Frog Pond, be on the lookout for the resident snapping turtle...be sure to watch your toes!

3. The Labyrinth

As you continue down the path, you will soon come across the Labyrinth. In Greek mythology, the Labyrinth was an elaborate, confusing structure that was designed to hold the Minotaur. However, in the case of the Avalon Labyrinth, this elaborate structure symbolizes wholeness. The meandering path to the center allows one some time to actively think and reflect on a meaningful question they have, usually revolving around their whole self. Essentially, the Labyrinth represents one's journey to your own center. So while visiting, take some time to center yourself and reflect on your personal goals and aspirations.

4. Hilltop Meadow

To gain access to the following areas, be sure to cross the road at the end of the first section of the preserve. Once you enter the second wooded area, veer left up the hill to enter Hilltop Meadow. This large area of Avalon has an abundance of paths surrounded by fields of flowers. This area is where I tend to see a variety of butterflies, deer, chipmunks, and more. It is so peaceful to be surrounded by the natural sights and sounds of nature! I usually do one big loop in this area, but there are a few different trails. There are also even more trails if you cross over into another section of the preserve! While walking here, make sure you are on the lookout for a cutout in the center of all the flowers. There will be a few trees and rocks in a circular shape. It is a great area to relax!

5. Cartas Al Cielo

Shortly after entering Hilltop Meadow, you will see a sphere in the distance on top of a little hill. This is the Cartas Al Cielo (Letters to Heaven). Here, you have the opportunity to send messages beyond our earthly realm. Avalon Nature Preserve provides the paper and pencil in a box to compose your letter to a loved one. Once you are done writing, place your letter in the giant sphere so that your loved one can read your meaningful, thoughtful letter.

Avalon Nature Preserve is definitely worth visiting at least once (preferably more!) if you have the chance. Since it can be a far drive for some, I recommend visiting Stony Brook Village, which is less than a 5 minute walk from the preserve. There are so many shops and restaurants! Typically, my friend and I will first have a delicious lunch in the village prior to walking Avalon. I highly recommend eating at Crazy Beans! They have yummy breakfast and lunch options, and a variety of unique coffee flavors. This meal will definitely help energize you before partaking in a long afternoon at Avalon!

Avalon Nature Preserve also offers special programs and events. If you plan on visiting, be sure to check out their website to see if they are hosting any programs/events during the course of your visit!

Many more adventures to come,

Ashley
